For over forty years, Spectrum has been on the forefront of substance abuse treatment, helping thousands of individuals overcome addiction to lead satisfying and productive lives.
Originally known as "Spectrum House," Spectrum was responsible for establishing one of the first therapeutic communities in the country for the treatment of drug abuse. Since the company's founding in 1969, Spectrum has grown considerably, broadening its array of services, expanding to other states, and developing specialized services to meet the unique needs of high-risk populations, including offender addicts and troubled youth.
Today, Spectrum is a national leader in substance abuse treatment, serving nearly 18,000 individuals each year through more than 55 institutional and community-based programs, from Maine to Georgia. Many of Spectrum's programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Through the operation of these programs, Spectrum has demonstrated its effectiveness in developing strong partnerships with public sector purchasers. Recognizing the unique management approach needed to support a national operation, Spectrum's corporate infrastructure provides specialized expertise in the areas of clinical design, human resources, professional development, risk management, compliance and quality improvement.

Spectrum’s Behavioral Health Division offers a full array of CARF accredited substance abuse and mental health treatment services. The Westborough Treatment Campus, based in Massachusetts, serves as the flagship of Spectrum Health Systems. It is the largest substance abuse treatment facility in New England, providing inpatient detoxification, transitional support services and therapeutic community treatment. Spectrum also provides a comprehensive array of ambulatory services to clients at various stages of recovery at clinics located across the state.
Spectrum’s full range of services offers individuals with mental health and substance abuse disorders the opportunity to transition to less intensive treatment modalities as their recovery progresses. Spectrum’s clinical design, philosophy and approach are congruent across all programs.
Detoxification Services – Inpatient detoxification services are provided to male and female adults in need of medically supervised withdrawal from the physical aspects of addiction. A special treatment track for pregnant addicts addresses the unique needs of this high-risk population.
Transitional Support Services – Following detoxification, short-term transitional support services are available to further stabilize clients and prepare them for the next phase of recovery. Length of stay is generally two to four weeks, depending on the aftercare goals of the client.
Residential Rehabilitation – Spectrum operates two longer-term residential programs based upon cognitive behavioral and social learning models, with a strong emphasis on relapse prevention. Clients participate in a structured weekly schedule consisting of recovery groups, individual counseling, recreational activities and relapse prevention planning. Length of stay is generally six months.
Outpatient Opiate Treatment – Spectrum offers long and short-term methadone treatment services to opiate addicted individuals at clinics located in Worcester, Milford and Framingham, Massachusetts.
Outpatient Counseling – Spectrum provides substance abuse counseling services, alcohol education programs for DUI offenders and batterer intervention programming for men with histories of domestic violence.
Mental Health Services – Spectrum provides mental health assessment services, treatment planning, counseling and medication management.
In total, Spectrum’s Behavioral Health Division serves nearly 3,000 individuals on any given day.
