The News-Star was founded in 1890 as The Evening News. In 1909, The Evening News merged with the Daily Star to form the evening newspaper, The Monroe News-Star. In 1929, Col. Robert Ewing, who was then publisher of The New Orleans States and Shreveport Times, established The Monroe Morning World and acquired The News-Star one year later. The two papers remained in the Ewing family until the Gannett acquisition June 16, 1977. The Morning World and The News-Star consolidated August 4, 1980 and became The News-Star-World. The name was later changed and the first edition of The News-Star was printed May 22, 1988.
