Unified Grocers (Unified) is the largest retailer-owned wholesale grocery cooperative in the western United States. Our talented team of approximately 3,500 employees provides the products and services grocery stores need to successfully compete in today’s diverse supermarket industry.
Since our company’s founding in 1922 when 15 independent retail grocers pooled their resources to improve their businesses efficiency and formed Certified Grocers of California, the cooperative organization has enjoyed steady and consistent growth.
In 1999, Certified Grocers changed its name to Unified Western Grocers after merging with United Grocers, Inc. a $1 billion grocery cooperative based in Portland, Oregon. In May 2007, as part of an initiative to strengthen its corporate brand and image, the company changed its name again to Unified Grocers. In September 2007, Unified acquired Associated Grocers, Inc. a $1 billion grocery cooperative based in Seattle, Washington.
Today, Unified generates approximately $4 billion in annual sales and serves over 2,500 member storesand nearly 6,000 customer locations in neighborhoods throughout the West, including Alaska, Hawaii and the Pacific Rim.
Our customers include such fine grocery stores as Gelson’s, Raley’s, Superior Grocers, Thriftway, Roth’s, Haggen Food & Pharmacy, and Metropolitan Market.
As an important part of our employees’ total compensation package, Unified Grocers provides an attractive and comprehensive benefits program. Unified’s benefit plans have been designed to address the diverse needs of our employees and to provide a measure of financial security for them and their families.
The benefits program has also been developed on the principle of a partnership between our employees and Unified. As their partner, Unified provides an array of benefits to employees and their dependents. In return, each employee’s skills, experience and knowledge are valuable contributions that will be critical to the growth and success of the Company.
