Shopko was founded by a pharmacist, James Ruben. When Ruben opened Shopko’s first store in Green Bay in 1962, he envisioned a company focused on three main themes: quality, convenience and value. He saw the opportunity to combine health care services with a large discount store, and Shopko became one of the first mass retailers to feature pharmacies and eye care centers in its stores.

Commitment to Retail Health

Shopko's professional dedication to retail health makes us unique from other retailers. Nearly all Shopko Stores offer pharmacies and in-store eye care centers. Pharmacy and eye care centers represent about 30 percent of the Shopko division’s sales.

Shopko is the second largest pharmacy in the entire country when it comes to number of prescriptions filled per store, per day. Our pharmacists fill more than 12-million prescriptions a year and our stores are set up so our pharmacists can provide private, one-on-one consultations with patients.

Shopko owns its own state-of-the art optical lab. This 30-thousand square foot optical lab supplies our ShopKo eye care centers, filling approximately 12-hundred contact lens prescriptions and 16-hundred eyeglass prescriptions daily.

Annually, we fill more than 700-thousand prescriptions and sell 300-thousand pair of eyeglasses! That lands Shopko in the top 15 largest optical companies in the United States. Like our pharmacies, superior customer service makes Shopko eye care centers stand out from the competition. Our eye care centers have achieved an extraordinary 93 percent customer satisfaction rate over the past several years.

State-of-the-Art Distribution

Shopko operates its own distribution network and fleet of trucks. Through these centers, automated conveyors and computer tracking allow quick and efficient delivery of 32 million cartons of merchandise to Shopko stores.
