The News-Messenger traces its roots to 1856, and is one of the oldest business enterprises in Sandusky County. The Fremont Messenger was founded in 1856, and sold to F.J. Daubel at bankruptcy sale in 1925. The Fremont News was founded in 1887. The city of Fremont had two daily newspapers until 1938, when Daubel bought out the News and merged the two into today's News-Messenger. The combined papers were first published on Monday, Oct. 3, 1938. In 1969 the Port Clinton News Herald was acquired. Both papers were run as part of a family business until 1975, when they were sold to Gannett.
The News-Messenger is the only daily newspaper headquartered in Sandusky County. It serves its home city of Fremont, all of Sandusky County and parts of adjacent counties.
Neighbors, its TMC product with a circulation of 10,039, is distributed every Saturday/Monday by the U.S. Post Office to all non-subscribers of The News-Messenger in Sandusky County.

Fremont is home of the Hayes Presidential Center, the home of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States. The Presidential Museum and Library are located on a 25-acre estate known as Spiegel Grove in Fremont.
The Sandusky River is famous for the spring walleye run and the white bass fishing. Sandusky County Park District has more than 500 acres for public use offering a variety of recreational opportunities. A bike trail from Fremont to Clyde offers a safe area for walking, biking and rollerblading.
Sandusky County is a rich agricultural area. Area farmers grow a diverse selection of crops. Sandusky County is number three in the state in production of fruits, vegetables, nursery and greenhouses.
Fremont is located four miles south of the Ohio Turnpike. Freight service is provided by railroads passing directly through the city. The county has a variety of industrial plants employing thousands of people. The Kessler Industrial Park opened in 1964 and the Bark Creek Center opened in 1990. Major development has occurred just north of the city. In 1997 the County Airport groundbreaking ceremony took place. The county has more than 130 manufacturers producing a wide range of products.
During the War of 1812, Fort Stephenson was built to hold off the British. It was here that Major George Croghan (nephew of George Rogers Clark), with only 160 men and a six-pound cannon called "Old Betsy," held the fort for two days against British forces under General Proctor.
In 1817 a village named "Lower Sandusky" was built on the west side of the Sandusky River. The village included the earlier settlement of "Croghansville" built on the east side of the river. The name was changed to "Fremont" in 1849. The city was made county seat of Sandusky County. Fremont's early industry included saw mills, flour mills and the first sugar mill in Ohio. The area began to grow rapidly as an industrial center after the gas boom of the late 1800s.
