About Us
Vision

Zachry Construction Corporation is an internationally known construction and industrial maintenance service company. Construction projects are located from coast to coast, with a concentration in Texas and the southeastern sector of the United States: total employment averages 9,000. Affiliated companies are engaged in cement manufacturing, aggregates and ready-mix concrete, ranching, oil and gas, real estate, property management and development. These employ an additional 1,000 people.

Zachry Construction Corporation was founded as H. B. Zachry Company on August 23, 1924 in Laredo, Texas, by Henry Bartell Zachry, a civil engineering graduate of Texas A & M University and a former assistant county engineer and surveyor. The new firm operated from the second floor of a Laredo drugstore and planned to specialize in highway and bridge construction, and in residential and small commercial building construction.

Zachry Company’s first job was a bridge construction contract for the Texas Highway Department in Laredo. Mr. Zachry personally handled all engineering, supervisory and office operations for the project. By 1928 the company had completed a number of successful projects for the Texas Highway Department, and the Company was destined to become one of the state’s foremost construction firms.

The company continued to grow modestly throughout the 1930’s when most contracting firms were failing and many banks were closing their doors. Zachry took pride in undertaking the most challenging highway paving jobs, continually managing to beat its construction schedules and show profits, even on the most competitive jobs.

During the war years of the 1940’s the company made significant contributions to the military construction needs within Texas, after having asked and been denied having his entire company placed under military command as a unit. The company achieved unparalleled performance in its contracts with the government during the war. It was during this time that the company built the Hondo Navigation School (west of San Antonio), complete with site development, water wells, utilities, paved streets, classrooms, barracks, officer quarters, concrete runways and aprons, hangars, shops, mess halls, chapels, a huge hospital and more – in a total of ninety calendar days. This attests to the increasing capability and will of a growing company.

In its postwar projects, the company began to diversify. Although Zachry’s highway operations continued to grow, the firm also began to contract work for dams, bridges, airports, pipelines, processing plants, hospitals, power plants, railroads, buildings and most other types of construction. Zachry gradually spread from a South Texas contracting company to an international construction firm.

H. B. (Bartell) Zachry, Jr. was named president in 1965 and, after his father’s death 1984, became chairman and CEO. His hands-on management style closely parallels that of his father. His enthusiasm for his work, his close relationship with many of the men and women who work with him, his sense of fairness and his intense interest in all facets of a construction project are all trademarks of his style.

Each decade has provided wider horizons, more challenges and greater opportunities. Through the foundation and principles established by H. B. (Pat) Zachry, the company has continued to grow. Zachry Construction Corporation is a recognized leader in many types of construction and is active in these disciplines: Process plants, power plants, industrial and manufacturing plants, highway and transportation facilities, dams and airfields, waste treatment facilities, water works, building construction, pipelines and industrial maintenance and services. The affiliated companies mentioned earlier significantly add to the capability and scope of the operations.

Today John and David Zachry now provide the leadership in the construction operations, after having begun their careers in the field just like their father and grandfather before them.
